Time Trials for Beginners
by Adrian Main

Adrian Main has written an article entitled "Time Trialling for Beginners".

Time Trials Reports
by Pete Hutchinson in 2010 and by Roy Goodbier for previous years

10 mile Time Trial Report: Wednesday 18th August on K33/10

Wednesday saw another dry and pretty still evening for the few riders not put In the last time trial of the season, we were once again lucky with the weather despite the ominous black clouds. Riders fortunes were somewhat mixed with no improvements on last weeks personal and season's best times. Tom Stockdale (Team Qoroz) was first off, first back and posted the fastest time of 21m 58s. George Coghlan (Janus RC) chased Tom home with a good 22:22. Richard Gill was fastest Wheeler with 23m 59s and Emma Gill fastest lady with 24:49. Emma won the Handicap for Evesham Wheelers with Andrew Tarring coming second. Many thanks once again to all who turned out to help and make the event run smoothly.

10 mile Time Trial Report: Wednesday 11th August on K33/10

Wednesday saw another dry and pretty still evening for the few riders not put off by the previous week's tragedy. Warwickshire traffic Police came along to see if we were running things properly and the event ran smoothly. Thank you to everyone who turned out to help.
The good conditions allowed several riders to achieve personal best times or season's best times for the K33/10 course. Cult Racing's, Michael Thelwell came first with 22m 21s (SB) closely followed by George Coghlan, Janus RC (22m 36s) and Paul Gareze, Lomond Roads CC (22m 40s). Scott Law was first Wheeler home in 22m 48s. Evesham Wheelers, Fred Meades (25m 06s) and Tracy Dresch (25m 50s) achieved personal bests.
Our next Time Trial is on Wed 18 August 10 and is the last of the season before the annual Hill Climb up Dovers Hill on Wed 1 Sept 10.

25 mile Time Trial Report: Wednesday 21 July 2010, Evesham Wheelers vs Cheltenham & County CC on U703A

Sixteen riders took an optimistic view of the clouds and were rewarded with a dry evening, with a light wind, for the annual 25 mile inter-club time trail between Evesham Wheelers and Cheltenham & County CC. For most competitors this involves well over an hour of pain but Evesham's Tom Stockdale came home first in 58m 55s, with Mike Thelwell chasing hard to come in just under the hour with 59m 45s. Matt Ullmer was third for Evesham in 60m 48s. For Cheltenham, the first three home were Scott McCardle 60m 40s, Stuart Holt 61m 03s and Simon Tarrant 61m 48s. So Evesham won with an aggregate time of 179m 28s to Cheltenham's 183m 31s. However Evesham had a small advantage as their aggregate age was 58 years to Cheltenham's 108years!! Well done to Evesham's Fred Meades on his first 25 mile TT with a respectable time of 71m 55s.

10 Time Trial K33/10 07/07/10 Evesham Wheelers vs Beacon RC

Wednesday evening saw Evesham Wheelers take on Beacon RCC over the K33/10. The event was unplanned but an administrative error had both clubs down to use the course at the same time, so a little lively competition ensued! For a change, the sun shone on the Evesham Wheelers who came out on top winning by 2m 45s in what were once again pretty good conditions for time trialling. There was only a light breeze to fight on the way home but it did mean most riders put in slower times than usual. Scott Law came home first for Evesham in 24m 03s, Ian Lambert was second in 24m 36s and Andrew Tarring third in 25m 02s (personal best this season). Beacon's Simon Packer was back in the excellent time of 23m 48s but Simon Wheeler and David Cole lagged behind a little, giving Evesham the advantage. Evesham's aggregate time was 73m 41s and Beacon's 76m 26s. Well done everyone who took part and thanks to all those who helped. We plan to put this event into the calendar for next year.

10 Time Trial K33/10 23/06/10

Wednesday evening came at the end of another warm and sunny day with only the lightest of breezes to thwart riders aspiring to 'PBs'. The A46 was unusually quiet on account of the England football game so conditions on the road were better than normal too. Fourteen riders took part with Ed Moss of Beacon coming home fastest in 22m 18s, Steve Goodbier was first Evesham Wheeler home in 22:57 just beating an improving Mike Thelwell by 3 seconds. Emma Gill was fastest lady on the night achieving a good 24m 51s ride.

10 Mile Inter Club Cheltenham/Stratford/Evesham on K33/10 24th June 2010

Thursday evening closed another good day to be out on a bike and Cheltenham and County CC hosted a 3-way Inter-Club event against Evesham Wheelers and Stratford CC. Unfortunately Evesham were only able to field 3 riders but Robert Biddlecombe 22m 32s and Richard Gill 23m 27s put in good times. However Stratford were clear winners on the night with an aggregate time of 63m 55s for their first three riders home, J Wall coming in first at 20m 17s, and Cheltenham were second with 65m 28s, C Zenattecci in 20:56. Evesham were third with an aggregate time of 71m 25s. Thanks to Ken Ascroft and his team for organising this event.

Evesham Wheelers vs Stratford upon Avon CC
10 Mile Time Trial K33/10 2nd June 2010

On an almost perfect evening for riding a time trial, 11 Evesham wheelers took on a large force from Stratford who mustered 21 riders. In the warm, sunny and almost breezeless conditions, some very good times were achieved with Ben Stockdale (Evesham Wheelers) coming home first in 20m 16s but Stratford had greater strength in depth and their top 3 riders had an aggregate time of 65m 7s to Evesham’s 67m 9s. So Stratford won by 2m 2s. Stratford’s top 3 riders were M Stallard(21:37), Tony Kiss(21:43) and Peter Evans(21:47). Evesham’s top 3 riders were Ben Stockdale(20:16), Steve Goodbier(23:15) and Stuart Smith(23:38).

Both clubs had 2 lady riders each and Alison Bagnam(Stratford) was first home in 24m 38s. However Helen Russell(24:47) and Tracy Dresch(26:11) for Evesham pipped Alison Bagnam and Miranda Harris(26:53) for Stratford with the better aggregate time by 33s. Evesham hosted the event, so many thanks to all who helped with running it. Special mention should go to John Oxtoby (Stratford) who despite being some 54 years ahead of Ben Stockdale only lost 6m 19s to Ben on the night!

K39/10 12th May 2010 (2 Up)

A disappointing turnout on what was not a bad evening, weather-wise, for a timetrial but the weather earlier in the day may have put some riders off. So there were only two 2-Up teams - Emma and Richard's partnership doesn't extend to Team time Trials! However, we were joined by at least 100 motorbikes so perhaps a small field was best! The noise made communication between Timekeeper and Recorder difficult and at least two riders felt that a two wheeled rocket had narrowly missed them. Matt and Tom stayed joined at the hip to put in an excellent time. Phil and Matthew tried hard to catch them but 'got divorced' about half way and 40+ year old legs don't go round as fast as young ones. The solo times were all good for the course which does not ride as fast as the K33.

K33/10 5th May 2010

It was almost a perfect evening for a time trial; no environmental wind and no rain. It could have been a little warmer but this did not hinder Phil Blacker’s attempt to melt the tarmac as he put in an excellent 21m 37s. Most riders achieved faster times than this time last year. Amongst the Evesham riders to go faster were notably Andrew Tarring who was fastest Evesham vet and Robert Biddlecombe, fastest senior. Mick Hunt doing his first ever TT did a very creditable 27m 17s and didn’t need to trouble me in a professional capacity after it. Phil Packwood’s strength was too great for his bike, which fell apart as he headed back towards Birmingham. What would he have achieved if he had been more fortunate?

K39/5T 21st April 2010

We had a sunny, chilly evening for our first TT of the year with a light but steady SW wind. it may have felt stronger on a bike! Tom stockdale put in a good time considering that he was only just over 'Man Flu'. Robert Biddlecombe headed up the seniors. He might have caught Tom, if he hadn't been generating electricity in his rear hub. Emma Gill put in a sterling effort and had husband Richard worried at the start that she might just beat him. Ian Lambert was fastest veteran and newcomer Justin Neals put in a respectable time for a first TT. Overall there were good times for this time of year on a course that would benefit from some attention by Gloucestershire CC.

K33/10S: 3 June 09

With 45 riders the night was a great success for Evesham although we didn't win the time difference is coming down. Stratford pulling out there big guns we did very well. Pete did a good job holding the fort for me and thanks to the timekeepers and marshals for the help.

K33/10S: 13 May 09

The wind was from the west so a good night was had by all. Tom and George were the only ones under 23 min with a 22.25 and a 22.30 min. The first Evesham rider was Robert Biddlecombe on 23.21 min with Scott 1 second and Matt 3 seconds off the pace. 5 other riders were under 24 min. Most riders improved on the last race by a few seconds. We also had a tandem out in training to take the 10 mile record later on in the season. Michelle King and Ruth Eyles did a 22.25 min and would have done under 22 min but for the chain jumping of, so good luck on your attempt.

K33/10S: 29 April 09

The first 10 for Evesham 2009. A good turn out was had on a good evening. The 20 Evesham riders did a good job and some good early season times where had by all. With 19 private riders taking the top spots with good early season time by Nick & George on low 22 min and 12 riders under 24 min. Noted Evesham rides were Scott on 23.18 min, Rachel 23.38 min and new comer Robert Biddlecombe 23.44 min.

K39/5T: 15 April 09

The club did it's first event this year, a come and try it race along the Toddington to Teddington road. With a brisk tail wind all did fast times as the results show. Tom Stockdale our last years cup winner was first back with noted rides from some of the new comers to racing i.e. Robert Biddlecombe, Karl Ruijsenaars, Mike Thellwell. The ladies did well as shown by Rachel, Tracy & Hellen. 25 entries on the night was a great success and all enjoyed the night out.

KH/27 - Dover's Hill Climb: 03 September 08

On a surprisingly dry evening, nine riders took on the annual challenge of taming Dover’s Hill. The usual suspects turned out but it was good to see some new, more mature faces defying the years. Sibling rivalry saw the Stockdales, Ben and Tom, soar to the summit in first and second respectively, split by only 4 seconds. Matt Ulmer came in third with a very respectable 4mins 52secs. Dave Newbould put in a very creditable effort for his first attempt with a 7mins 17secs and Tony Canning’s 6mins 51secs should see him live to a hundred with years of improvement to come!

 Pete Hutchinson

K33/10: 06 August 08

Twenty riders defied the weather forecast and were rewarded with a pretty dry run and a very light SW breeze. Times were good with Alistair McChesney pulling off the fastest time at 21:00 minutes, a clear minute ahead of second George Coghlan with 22:06. A further minute behind was Scott McCardle and hot on his heels was Scott Law, the fastest Wheeler of the evening with his best time this year and a PB. Several riders were doing their first ever time trial and all turned in very respectable times so will have to work even harder next time! Thank you to everyone who came to help and make the event possible.

 Pete Hutchinson

K39/10: 09 July 08

On a miserable evening for July, eight hardy Wheelers turned out to support the event and one poor chap from Stratford CC arrived only to discover he had forgotten his front skewer! Riders dodged the puddles, endured the rain and fought home into the South-westerley breeze to set good times. Ben Stockdale came home fastest in 21:39, with Matt Ulmer 24:11 and Richard Gill 24:15 fighting it out for second and third. Ben’s time was faster than his last on K33/10 in better weather so this course appears to suit him. Otherwise times were generally slightly slower for everyone but still very good considering the conditions. Thanks to everyone who helped run the event and to those brave enough to take part.

 Pete Hutchinson

K33/10S: 25 June 08

On a wind evening the times were a bit down on normal but with Ben Stockdale fastest with a 22.31 and Rachael Hobbs on 23.50. Matt Ullmer 24.00, Steven Goodbier 24.17, Richard Gill 24.20 & Tom Stockdale 24.25. With James Stout, Graham McMillan, Paul Stockdale, Andrew Tarring on fixed all a few minutes off the pace. Helen Russell keeps improving on a long 27 min. Other noted times were vet Peter Evens 23.40 and Miranda on a 29.09 which was good for the night. Well done all.
K33/10S: 19 June 08 - Stratford & Evesham Interclub

Interclub: Evesham Wheelers against Stratford CC organised by Stratford was another good event with Stratford just getting the better of us on a windy cool night. This caused a drop in times by all but Evesham did very well to keep it to only 3min of the pace. I think next year we should beat them.
K33/10S: 04 June 08 - Stratford & Cheltenham Interclub

The first interclub of the 2008 was a great success, with 49 riders on the night. Fast times were achieved by all three clubs. 1 with a 20min 50sec, 10 under 22min and most of the others going bellow 25min. Charles Zanettacci was the fastest with Tom Stockdale on 21min 30sec. Cheltenham won both seniors and vets but was pushed hard by Stratford and Evesham put up a very good showing from previous years, well done to all riders.
K33/10S: 14 May 08

Weather conditions: North east wind 12mph, temperature 21c. Conditions medium. With Tom Stockdale achieving a best time of 21.56 with the nearest 1 min behind, his new bike must be paying off. Some good early season times were had by our strengthening Evesham team of riders with Rachel and Steven in the 23 min mark and Matt on a short 24min. Respectable time from all the vets with Brian from the Birmingham CC first vet back on 24.23, Tom, Stratford CC 24.28 and first Evesham vet Andrew Bailey 24.47, Ian on a good 24.52. The Stratford Team of ladies going well with Louise first at 27.26, Karen 28.59, Mirranda 30.07 not too bad with our ladies doing well - Rachel on 23.55 and Helen on 29.03 but I'm sure all will improve as the season progresses. Other times to mention, Paul 28.48 not too bad due to a fall in the week. Scott doing a respectable 26min Luke and Pete coming at the rear with plenty of time to improve.
K33/10S: 30 April 08

On a cloudy, showers on the night we just missed the worst weather. Ben Stockdale on his brothers TT bike came an impresive 1st with George Coghton from Wilmslow doing an impresive 22.47 on a meadium gear. Evesham riders did some good early season times Matt on 23.08 Andrew Bailey 23.44. Emma Gill 1st lady on a 26.03 with Andrew Tarring, Hellen Russell, Robin Walker and Cathy pulling up the rear a good evening was had by all. Other times were Peter Keighley 23.53 Stratford CC. Chris Udall 25.03 Gloucs City. Dia 25.26 Stratford Alan Taylor on fixed 90inch 25.40 Climb on Bike and ex Evesham Wheeler.

The Little Mountains Time Trial on the K22/39

4 Evesham Wheelers were riding an historic and classic cycle race, The Little Mountains Time Trial on the K22/39. The 39 miles included the climbs of Stanford bank and Ankerdine hill. In wet conditions our members all showed the Evesham colours well.

Phil Parsons came in with an impressive 1hr-51min-05sec; Steven Goodbier beating his personal best by 5min-31sec in a time of 1hr-53min-36sec; Michelle Parsons first lady at 1hr-58-00sec; Andrew Bailey at 1hr-59min-29sec. Best time on the day was by top seed Matthew Bottrill with a time of 1hr-39min-08sec, 3min down on his personal best.

K39/5T: 16 April 08

The first race of the season went off to a great start on the K39/5T at Teddington, on a near perfect night with a tail wind all the way some fast times were had. Noted times are Alan Warburton of Cheltenham & County CC with a very fast 9min 44sec. Our best Evesham time was done by our junior Tom Stockdale on his new time trial bike at 10min 16sec. The fastest lady was Rachel Hobbs at 10min 51sec. New riders to time trialling, Emma Gill at, 11min 37sec. Peter Davis at, 12min 46sec and new junior Mikey Thelwell at a credited 13 min 05sec.

Noted mention to the Smalley team consisting of mum dad & son. Colin just was piping Jan by 4 seconds and Cameron showing them how his season will progress.
2007 Year End Report

The year went well all in all, so hopefully this will be a turn for the better for the future.

Thanks to all who made my job easier throughout the season, without whom the job would be impossible for me to manage with the amount of entries we get at some events. The entries on the night have ranged from 6 up to as many as 37 riders with an average of 17.63 per event, an increase from 2006 by 25% on turn out. Evesham organised 11 events over the year with 3 of those interclubs with Cheltenham and Stratford, we didn’t win any but we are getting closer each year.

My thanks go out to Gordon Taylor and Dave Purser our time keeper’s. Roger Freeman, Paul Stockdale and anyone I have missed, with a special mention to the late John Aulton who is greatly missed, also the riders who we wouldn’t survive without.

It was decided by the RTTC that levies go up next year (2008 season) by 100% to £1.00 for club events, due to the falling entrants in open event. They say that open events have been subsidising club events for the past years. The club will need to raise the entry fee to either £1.50 or £2.00 to accommodate this rise. This will be open to discussion to all members who can advise me which price to charge. But if no response I will make the decision and try for £2.00.

It was suggested to me by a fellow member that a race sub-committee would be of a great help to me and I agreed with him. The duties would be to help with the general running on the night i.e. marshalling, warning sign placing and just someone to discuss the progression of time-trialling within the club.

The winners of cups will be posted on the web sit at a future date but if you want a cup you will need to send me a result sheet, no result sheet no cup.

Noted times this year are:

Steven Goodbier, 10 mile short 22min. 25 mile 57.03min
Rachael Hobbs, 10 mile short 23min

I would be willing to stand again for Race sec if all still want me to carry on and thanks again for making it such a good year. Roy.

KH/27 Dover's Hill - 5 September 2007

Last race of the year with a pretty poor turn out for the hill climb but all who entered did respectable times. Ben winning but with Matt and Tom snapping at is heels. Philip just off the pace. Rik Cooper our only private entry with a creditable time. With Graeme pulling out a good turn of speed and our vets putting in a good show. Pete Hutchinson on his first ever hill climb getting a creditable time.

K39/10T - 22 August 2007

Last 10 mile time trial of the year for Evesham Wheelers with some class riders coming out for a windy cool evening. The great John French was top man and Graeme Dickson back on the bike. First Evesham Wheeler back was Rachael with young Tom snapping at her heels and Andrew progressing well - I think next season he will be down in the high 22 min. But all did well with a fine end to the season.

K33/10R - 8 August 2007

With some good weather at last, the night was set fair for good times. Paul Carson doing a superb ride of 21.52 with Steven Goodbier just off the pace with an impressive 22.52. most other riders going above the 24min mark. Scott Law is improving well with a 24.43 so I think we will be hearing from this young man in the future.

Tonight's race was a wet and cold one for all who rode. Slowish times were achieved by all riders except the last 3 men beating their last time out by seconds, showing that the older riders are more attuned to the wet and cold. Paul Carson being 1st man back with Rachel 1¼ min off the pace. The juniors doing well again with Scott doing well on his 2nd club race this year.

K33/10S Interclub Stratford - 28 June 2007

On a shortened course due to road works a distance of 6.5 miles was covered. A wet night was on and with Evesham doing well to be only beaten by 3 min 48 sec a good result for Stratford was achieved. The fastest for the night was Mark Heath at 15 min 13 sec and the best from Evesham was Rachel Hobbs on a 16 min 01 sec; Tom Stockdale doing a good time 1 min 31 sec off the pace. Our vets didn't do too bad so there is hope for next year.

With a strong outward wind the race will have been a tester for all riders. Cheltenham's Graeme Dickson winning the night on a 59.44 was a exceptional ride for the course. Evesham's best on the night was Matt Ullmer - 2 minutes off the pace. With Miranda achieving a respctable time after completing a 15 Mile run the day before, well done Miranda. Cheltenham won by 23 min 32 sec - well done Cheltenham but wait till next year.
